In Service of Allotment Gardens and Home Ownership
By the late 1920s, films on pest control in fruit and grocery production were shown in the cinema halls of local groups. These screenings were usually followed by a lecture on the subject. Cooking courses and plant pruning workshops were also part of the activities of the various sections.
The Revue mensuelle de floriculture, de jardinage, d’arboriculture et d’aviculture published by the Federation of Small Gardening Associations was replaced in 1928 by the monthly publication of the two merged associations « Kleingarten und Eigenheim. » From 1933 to 1937, the Luxemburger Kleingärtnerkalender, a precursor to the current Mein Taschenbuch, which has been published annually since 1953, was also issued. This calendar was primarily dedicated to practical gardening tips, while the monthly magazine regularly reported experiences from abroad or presented plans for Luxembourgish single-family homes, model allotment gardens, and model school gardens. In addition to botany, health issues, and horticulture, there was also discussion about the hygienic importance of interior design in homes. Parliamentary debates on housing construction and agriculture were commented on in the monthly publications. The efforts of municipalities to support local gardening associations were closely monitored. Among the association’s demands to the government were the inclusion of gardening in elementary school curricula, legal regulation of child labor, the establishment of community gardens, and the training of youth leaders.
The League began participating in these celebrations from the first Mother’s Day in 1929 and coordinated the national organization of the event from 1931 onward.
